Half way through an episode of Scrubs, with bed-head hair and a half finished packet of chips, my phone decided that it was a good time to ring.
It was a call from a friend I’ve not heard from in quite awhile.
“Eh, do you have school in December?” He asked.
“No, I end exams by the end of November,” I replied.
“Good. You free on the 7th then? Wanna cover Subaru’s launch and press event in Thailand for me? I’m swamped. Gotta be in Munich that week.”
“What did you say?” I coughed.
“7th December. Thailand. SQ flight.”
Though I would ultimately reject him due to my trip to N. Korea that week, I was immensely flattered at the offer. It wasn’t so much the physical or monetary value of it all but the value of even being considered and trusted with such an assignment was what really hit me.
This semester has been rather harsh and sobering. Harsh and sobering because I had to face my inner demons again and again. Sometimes I’d win a small victory - a meek smile or a nod. But most of the time, they win. And on a few occasions, they’ve won big.
While the phone call didn’t amount to anything, the offer and the long conversation that ensued really made my day, month, and perhaps, this year.
